Man arrested following collision in Barnston and serious injury to cyclist

Merseyside Police has arrested a man after a cyclist was seriously injured in a collision in Barnston on Friday night (23 July).

At about 6.05pm, it was reported a blue Hyundai was in collision with the bike on Barnston Road. The cyclist was taken to hospital where he is being treated for a serious spinal injury.

Emergency services attended and the driver of the Hyundai was detained by police at the scene.

A 38-year-old man from Irby was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and drug driving.

He has been released under investigation while further enquiries into the incident continue.

Roads Policing Inspector Stuart McIver said: "Several medical professionals who were passing en route to work stopped to provide first aid and comfort to the injured cyclist, and I want to take this opportunity to thank them for their care and quick thinking.

"If you were in the Barnston Road area at around 6pm and witnessed any part of this incident, or saw the blue Hynudai shortly before, please contact police.

"Likewise, of you were driving in the area at that time and may have dashcam footage of the car or the incident, I would urge you to check your footage and contact us if there is anything at all that could assist our enquiries."
