Property of the Week: the former Heswall Police Station, Telegraph Road

This feature normally highlights a property for sale, but right now the old Heswall cop shop is not on the market.

After it was deemed surplus to requirements by a shake-up of local policing announced in 2014, the Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner tried to offload the building and its land, but it seems there were no takers.

This is perhaps due to the fact that the station's facade, which makes it one of the few distinctive buildings in Heswall, cannot be tampered with, making conversion by developers into flats, retail space, a restaurant or even a boutique hotel - all ideas which were floated by the PCC's agent - that little bit more difficult and expensive.

Earlier this month, Heswall Nub News mused on the station's future - floating the idea that it could somehow be turned into a community building that served youngsters by night and weekends and holidays, and older audiences at all other times.

There was a large and positive response to such a notion on social media - though of course there were plenty of other valid ideas.

Raising the money for such a project is not something you'd describe as easy - but at least initiatives like the Community Ownership Fund unveiled by Chancellor Rishi Sunak during the last Budget offer some hope.

Heswall Nub News contacted the Police and Crime Commissioner's Office and was told the station "is expected to go back to the marketplace in the next few months. However, as a new PCC will be elected in May, plans may change."

So the situation is far from clear, but that doesn't mean it's not worth considering what might be done, especially if a repurposed police station gives young folk something to do and actually makes local policing easier - and cheaper.

The station is a part single, part two storey building of traditional brick construction built in 1911, and designed by the respected architect Harry Beswick.

Internally, there are a number of linked rooms and offices at ground and first floor, with the two areas at the first floor being accessed by separate internal staircases.

In total, there are around 6000 square feet of floor space, along with a substantial car park.

Is this the ideal building to become some sort of community hub? Probably not, but I am sure a talented architect could dream up ways of turning those square feet into useful and happy spaces for years to come.
