Heswall FC: an uneven start to the season, but hope springs eternal

The new season is upon us and our teams have had a difficult start with two defeats apiece for our Reserves and First teams.

In our first season back in the First Division, our First Team travelled to Chester Nomads on the opening day and, despite going behind early on, we took a point after a deserved equaliser from Graham Mort.

At this time of year, games come thick and fast and the tough start continued with two further away games at Vauxhall's Reserves and FC Bootle. Sadly we went down to very narrow defeats, 2–1 and 3– 2 respectively.

While it's been a tough start, we are confident the lads will get the season up and running in the next few games.

Our Reserve Team, fielding several new players, succumbed to consecutive home defeats against Bootle and Poulton Royal. Both games ended with narrow margins of victory, 3–2 and 2–1.

A deserved and comprehensive victory came against local rivals West Kirby Reserves on Saturday as we triumphed 7–2 with goals from Euan Hibberd, Conor Egan, Skipper Nathan Johnston with a brace, and a fine hat trick from Dan O'Halloran.

The game was marred by a serious facial injury sustained by Conor Egan in a very unsavoury incident.

We wish him a full and speedy recovery.

Injuries have been the order of the start of the season with no fewer than three goalkeepers suffering injuries to ankles, back and ribs. As the adage goes though, one man's misery is another man's fortune, although in our case it may be more relevant to say two boys' fortunes as we have brought in a pair of tremendous young goalkeepers in Finn McGhee and Will Ebbrell. It's a great opportunity for the lads, and we are delighted to welcome both to the club. They've both shown great promise in their first few games. We wish all our injured lads a full recovery and look forward to seeing them all back out on the grass.

We would also like to welcome to Heswall FC our new kit sponsors and express our gratitude for their amazing support.

Dr Rose Club will be the sponsor for our First and Reserve team home kits, with CBE Services backing the away kit. Our U17 youth team is sponsored by The MPS Team.

We are currently looking for a sponsor for our Reserve Team away kit, and with great exposure across Wirral, Liverpool and into Cheshire, it's an excellent opportunity to support our club, promote your business and also become involved in grassroots football.

If interested then please call me, Club Chairman Robbie Matthews, on 07919877135, or email me at [email protected].
