Wirral Council's leader has announced the authority is ready to support plans for an Afghan refugee programme in the wake of the fall of the government in Afghanistan and the triumph of the Taliban.

The Taliban have now seized control of the Afghan capital Kabul, and many people, including those who have helped UK and US forces over the last two decades, are in fear of their lives despite reassurances made yesterday by the new regime.

Wirral has already been involved in supporting Syrian refugees since 2017 as well as other refugees from across the world, and council leader Janette Williamson said the authority is ready to help those forced to abandon their homes, jobs and education in Afghanistan.

Cllr Williamson said: "It has been truly shocking to see the images of people desperately fleeing, fearing for the lives. To witness women and girls facing lives of oppression and servitude.

"It is vital now that we stand up and make it clear that we can and will help, and the people of Wirral, as well as those across the UK, will welcome those who need our assistance."

The council leader said work is now underway to identify accommodation and seek details of funding from central Government to support the refugees.
