Parents, teachers, pupils and local community members shared in a very special event on Thursday to commemorate the life of Cathy Pepper, a former deputy headteacher of Heswall Primary School.
Cathy, who was known for her love of all wild creatures, had a special affinity for butterflies, and the children from Heswall Primary have worked alongside Mid Wirral Rotary club to create a butterfly garden and vegetable patch - now named 'Pepper's Patch'.
Mid Wirral Rotary Club has helped to fund the project, and spent the last few months digging out the patch and completing woodwork and planting.
Headteacher Jonathan Lawrenson said, "This is a very special addition to our school grounds, and we are so grateful to the Mid Wirral Rotary Club for helping us to create this amazing resource for the school. Mrs Pepper would have loved it!"
To mark the opening, the school borrowed a series of pollinator sculptures, which have been created in collaboration between Wirral Environmental Network, Alison Bailey Smith, Wirral Unplugged and Wirral Council Eco Schools programme.
The art can be booked for events to raise awareness of Wirral's biodiversity and the importance of pollinators, as well as inspiring creativity and highlighting the need to reduce waste.
