With a combined experience of over 40 years, Wirral-based David Jones and James Wharton are set to open Just Riding Along - an inclusive, community-focused bicycle repair shop on Bridge Street in Neston.

With an impressive history of senior mechanic roles in a broad range of cycling stores - from small independent businesses to leading, nationwide brands - the JRA owners have worked extensively within the industry, but have recognised an issue that they're keen to address.

James Wharton said: "Wherever we find ourselves working, we've noticed that there's often a level of intimidation for the customer. We've had so many conversations in which they've apologised for not knowing the right terminology, or because they weren't sure what was wrong with their bike. We've even spoken to those who feel that they're wasting our time because they believe they're not "real" cyclists.

"Though we recognise and respect cycling for the incredible sport that it is, we wanted to create an environment where anyone would feel comfortable getting the support that they need - from professional cyclists to those who are just starting out."

From workshops to online resources and training videos, the Just Riding Along team will offer a wide range of support alongside their expert services - but only if that's what the customer wants.

David Jones added: "The resources and advice will be there for those who want them - but we certainly won't force them upon anyone either. If you'd like to drop in for a quick and friendly service, that's exactly what you'll get. If you'd like to spend a little more time learning about your bike, we've got that covered for you too."

The owners are also keen to note that the friendly and welcoming environment of Just Riding Along won't impact upon the quality or expertise of their service.

In addition to his work within retail, James has worked extensively with Race Force, an international triathlon organisation, accompanying athletes across Europe as their on-hand, bike mechanic. Both are qualified mechanics, and have also undertaken extensive training in e-bike repair. Wharton added;

"Part of creating that comfortable environment," said James Wharton, "is making sure that the customer knows they're in safe hands. Our experience speaks for itself, and we hope that our customers will see that as a positive, rather than something to be intimidated by."

Ultimately, the two owners want to get people excited about cycling, regardless of their ability level.

"When the pandemic hit" David Jones added, "one of the few positive outcomes was seeing more people getting back on their bikes. Now, as we hopefully move on from COVID, we want to keep that interest alive, and we can't think of a better setting than Neston. It's a beautiful area with so many incredible bike paths and routes - and a real community feel that we hope Just Riding Along will soon be a part of."

Just Riding Along opens at 22 Bridge Street, Neston on Saturday 28th August.
