Storm Arwen: high winds hit Heswall and district

Storm Arwen brought high winds to parts of the UK including Wirral and Heswall a week ago, and inevitably they took their toll.

This tree came down in the early hours of last Saturday morning to block the A551 just 100 metres from the Devon Doorway roundabout.

Arrowe Park Road was littered with debris, and to complicate matters for early motorists the power to street lighting there had been knocked out.

On Telegraph Road a very large collapsed tree caused plenty of damage to the wall of the bowling green. (See picture in gallery at the top of this page.)

In addition to fallen trees, many local roads were strewn with large branches and fragments.

Gusts of almost 100 mph battered some areas of the UK, and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said it had been dealing with a "large number of incidents...caused by the current weather conditions, including many fallen trees and roofs being blown off structures."

The Met Office described gusts as "damaging", and having affected "a wide swathe of the United Kingdom".
