Heswall councillor wants abandoned boats on shore to be given boot

Earlier this month we posted pictures of boats on Heswall shore and remarked that, due to angry skies, the mud strewn with vessels small and large looked like the aftermath of some sort of apocalypse. It's not quite as bad as that, but it's also clear that in places this boat graveyard is an eyesore. To the untrained eye it is sometimes difficult to tell which boats have been left to rot and which are still in service or perhaps being restored - though one particular ageing hull full of twisted metal and broken glass has clearly been used as a marine skip. One reader remarked: "Can't believe those boats are allowed to stay there. It's basically fly tipping. Looks awful." Now Heswall councillor Andrew Hodson has said time should be up for the Heswall boats which will never ride the waves again. As Chair of the Regulatory and General Purposes Committee at Wirral Council, Andrew has already been instrumental in organising a similar clear-up operation at Meols Parade, where some boats were regarded as being in such a state of decay they were a safety hazard. The Conservative councillor told the Liverpool Echo: "A lot of local people are concerned about the state of Heswall shore. "There are a lot of old boats on the foreshore. It's unsightly and dangerous and a lot are filled with water and jagged metal." Councillor Hodson added that he has met with local agencies in order to identify the owners and tidy the shore. He said: "People are sort of just leaving them there, they're going to work on them and then leave them. "The shoreline is now full of rotting hulks, and that's something we will bring under control as in Meols. "It's harder in Heswall though as they are stuck in the mud."
