More than 200 Wirral roads and pavements are planned to undergo improvement works in the coming months as part of the council's annual Highways Structural Maintenance Programme.

And there's a whole bunch of them round here - 27 in total in the Heswall and Pensby and Thingwall wards.

The works are part of a £5.8 million pound investment in the roads network made possible by grant funding received through the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority.

A further £250,000 has been pledged for bridge maintenance, while a separate funding agreement is likely to see £1.9 million more invested in Wirral's Key Route Network (KRN).

The programmed works are taking place alongside other ongoing maintenance works to repair other road surface issues, such as potholes.

Wirral Council said: "Depending on the classification and condition of the road, one of three treatments will be applied as part of the programme. Hot Rolled Asphalt (HRA) is the most expensive of the three, but provides protection for up to 20 years – it tends to be used on main, heavy traffic routes in the borough.

"Surface Dressing can extend the life of the road surface by between eight and ten years, depending on the location, while Micro Asphalt is mostly used on local roads and streets and is laid over the existing road surface.

"Some residents might see patching works taking place before the scheduled surfacing works - people should be assured that these are preparation works; the main repairs will take place afterwards. And as with all of these kinds of programmes, the schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions."
