A popular poetry competition created in memory of a student from Calday Grammar School is now accepting entries from five age groups.
The Christopher Salmon Poetry Competition is named after the 15-year-old, who passed away suddenly in 2009 from a rare streptococcal infection.
Christopher had hoped to become an author, and dreamt of studying Russian and English at Oxford University.
His parents Julie and Rich Salmon told West Kirby Today: "After he passed away, we discovered a sheaf of poems he had written and hidden away in his room.
"This gave us the idea to launch a poetry competition in his name in order to encourage other young people to express themselves, with confidence, through the medium of poetry."
The 2021 Christoper Salmon competition is open to entrants aged 19 or under who live or are being educated in Wirral, and is run in conjunction with Wirral Libraries and Wirral Poetry Festival.
The theme for this year's competition is 'friendship', and a £100 prize will be awarded to the winner of each of the following five age categories:
- Age 7 and under (KS 1)
- Age 8-11 (KS 2)- Age 11-13 (KS 3)
- Age 14-16 (KS 4)- Age 16-19 (in full-time education)
The competition is free, and the closing date for entries is Friday 28th May.
