Wirral Council has a new mayor after a councillor who has served the authority for 33 years was elected to the position.
Cllr George Davies, who has represented Claughton for Labour since 1988, takes on the role after decades of service to the council.
Council leader Janette Williamson gave a glowing tribute to the new mayor at the first part of Wirral Council's annual meeting, which took place at New Brighton's Floral Pavilion theatre last night.
The Labour leader said Cllr Davies is dedicated to children's education and praised him for overseeing the refurbishment of the Noctorum estate.
Cllr Williamson added that the Claughton councillor is "known and liked by everyone" and congratulated him for his role on the local fire authority.
The council leader also paid tribute to the new mayor's role on the Housing Committee, saying what he doesn't know about housing isn't worth knowing.
In his acceptance speech, Cllr Davies said: "I feel humbled to stand here when we reflect over the last year.
"COVID-19 has impacted on every part of our lives and I would like to pay my respects on behalf of Wirral Council to all the families who have lost a loved one or suffered in any way.
"I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the key workers whose talent, skill and bravery throughout this pandemic continues to amaze and inspire me.
"Fellow councillors I am looking forward to my year as mayor and would like to thank each and every one of you for your loyal support and trust.
"I will diligently serve the people of Wirral to the best of my ability. It is an honour and a privilege to become mayor of Wirral, a peninsula that makes me proud."
Cllr Jeff Green, who has represented West Kirby and Thurstaston for the Conservatives since 1986, was elected to the position of deputy mayor.
