Heswall FC: a round up of weekend action: two out of three ain't bad

Following last week's victory over Capenhurst Villa, our First Team made the trip over to Maghull in what is always a tough game and a notoriously difficult place to claim victory. A fantastic club with a great set up, Maghull have a proud history and are a very well run outfit so we knew we were in for a game.

Our lads started like a team with renewed confidence and got at our hosts from the start. Man of the Match and skipper Christian Lewis led from the front, a player who has made a fine career for himself doing the hard work in the middle of the pitch, putting his foot in and driving us forward.

After doggedly winning the ball in the middle of the park, Christian had the eye to spot a through ball and expertly played in striker Danny Dixon who raced clear and calmly lifted the ball over the onrushing keeper to put the yellows ahead 1–0 inside 20 minutes.

Dominating the game for long spells, we were able to double our advantage ten minutes into the second half when Joe Ford played a great through ball for Shay Roberts to run on to, shift on to his favoured right side and smash home into the bottom corner to put the Yellows 2–0 up and in control of the game.

That meant Shay, who has only just stepped up from youth football, had hit his ninth goal of the season, a really impressive return from a very talented young forward.

We were able to comfortably close out the game and bring the points back to Gayton Park and seal back to back wins - with another away game coming up next week as we travel to Aintree Villa.

Our young Reserve Team welcomed Chester Nomads Reserves to Heswall as we looked to build on last weekend's convincing win at West Kirby. The performance, however, failed to match last week's and Nomads were the better team throughout. A penalty awarded for a soft handball led to the opening goal with stopper Finn Collins having no chance as a well taken strike put the visitors in control.

A second goal soon followed and the game was over as a contest without us laying much of a glove on our opponents. It was a disappointing result for the young lads, but we are confident in their ability to bounce back next week as we welcome Mersey Harps in the West Cheshire League Shield 1st Round.

Sunday morning saw our impressive Youth Team travel to Crewe Arrows in the Cheshire Youth Cup, looking to build on last week's victory at Hazel Grove United. The young lads are really developing into a very strong side and an outstanding performance was reflected in a comprehensive 10–1 win!

It was a superb team performance allied to some brilliant individual shows with strikes from Dan Malone, Ben Ryan, Callum Hill, Toby Ward - and goalkeeper Tom Plowman with a penalty - complemented by a brace from Charlie Harland and a fine hat trick from in-form Rocco Ceraolo.

The reward for a great result is a home tie against Appleton AFC Boys in the Quarter Finals on December 12th.

Please remember that our nice clubhouse remains available for both parties and community groups. We have a large function room with heating, toilets and ample parking, and can cater for birthday parties, anniversaries or group activities.
