On Tuesday just before Christmas, the government announced £1 billion of grant funding that will be made available to local councils in England - to help support businesses most affected by the COVID-19 Omicron variant.
The grant will be available to hospitality and leisure businesses who are experiencing difficulties because of the dual impact of staff absences and lower consumer demand.

Wirral Council faces an incredibly tough 2022, a year in which it will have to save millions to avoid effectively going bankrupt.
Two reports on the local authority, published last month, were heavily critical of elected councillors and officers, stating the 'prevailing culture' at the council prior to the pandemic had been to avoid difficult financial decisions, meaning the council's emergency reserves had been dramatically reduced in recent years.

Coronavirus cases are up by almost a third in Wirral, amid reports that more national restrictions may be brought in to tackle the Omicron variant.
In the week up to December 14, there were 1,770 cases of Covid-19 recorded in Wirral at a rate of 546 per 100,000.

In the week up to December 15, Bebington had 122 infections, followed by Rock Ferry (105) and Bromborough (102).
Two more wards, Bidston and St James and Birkenhead and Tranmere, had 101 cases.

The Liverpool Echo noticed that more than 500 people had signed our petition requesting that thought be given to establishing a much needed direct rail link from Heswall to Liverpool.
A weekend Echo story has had the welcome effect of adding more than 50 additional signatures.

Although we are never going see the return of the glory days of the distant past (like 1905, when this picture of the original Heswall station, courtesy of the Alsop Collection, was taken), at time of writing 470 people have signed our petition stating that Heswall needs a direct train service to Liverpool and back.
