Across Wirral, seven vaccination sites are offering walk-in appointments as part of a week-long push on walk-in sites to increase protection against the Omicron variant.

The Week of Walk-ins initiative, which ends on Sunday, 23 January, aims to raise awareness of how easy and convenient it is to get vaccinated and protected from becoming seriously ill with COVID-19.

Wirral Council's plan to close 11 libraries as part of a cuts package designed to save £20m has moved forward.

Pensby Library and ten others are up for the axe, while five more will remain open but unstaffed under the plan.

COVID-19 is still putting Wirral's NHS under "considerable pressure", even though infection rates are falling rapidly.

Cases in Wirral are down by more than 50% on last week, but Julie Webster, the borough's public health director, said pressures on health and social care will continue for "some time to come".

That is the key message from Dr Debbie Harvey, GP and Primary Care Lead for Cheshire & Merseyside Cancer Alliance, who is reminding people that free NHS cervical screening – previously called a smear test – is a really effective way to reduce the risk of developing cervical cancer.

A golfing teenager from Heswall is organising a charity golf day for Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of his grandad.

Fourteen-year-old Zach Webster first played golf five years ago after being inspired by his golfing grandad, who sadly died from cancer in 2014.

On Wednesday, road safety campaigner Pauline Fielding received her MBE.

The trustee of the RoadPeace charity, and its North West group coordinator, was presented with the honour by Prince William in recognition of her services.
