After recent miserable Saturdays it was a good weekend for Heswall when a very good team performance was rewarded with a fine win over a game Litherland Remyca Reserves team.

We set the tone early on with Ben Crossley and Dan O'Halloran working hard up top to stop them playing out and getting any time on the ball.

We were the better team and, midway through the half, Travis O'Brien hit a shot from just outside the box which the defender blocked. The ball came back to Trav who smashed it home from 18 yards with a great strike giving us a deserved lead.

With the lads continuing to work their socks off to stay in control of the game, the ball fell at the feet of Matty Walsh, easily 25 yards out, and he absolutely pinged it into the top corner for a worldy of a hit to put us two up - which was thoroughly deserved.

Half time came and went and - fair play to Remyca - they came back at us, forcing our keeper Luke Forshaw into several good saves, including a brilliant one hander he had no right to make.

As lads tired and changes were made, Tom Haynes received the ball just inside the Remyca half and went on a run finding himself with options. He chose the right one by slotting the ball home to wrap the game up and put three vital points on the board.

We are all delighted for the lads who haven't always got their just rewards lately despite some decent performances. We know there's a lot of football to play but we've given ourselves a chance, and made up with not only the quality of the goals but also that they were scored by a 20 year old and two 18 year olds.

Come what may this season, this is a young squad which will only improve and boast some very good players. They can hold their heads up and be proud of the spirit they are showing.

On to next week as we welcome Mossley Hill for what will be a very very tough game.

Yesterday was a nice tonic for me because I was in a hospital bed having recently undergone a full knee replacement. I will be back next week to get right behind the boys, and I hope any other locals who'd like to enjoy some great grassroots football will join us at Gayton Park.

We knew we had ten finals to play, and we won the first - so please come along and support the Yellows in the nine finals to come as Heswall FC looks to finish the season with a flourish.

We are also offering local businesses the opportunity to get involved with a Match Day Sponsor for those nine remaining games - and heartfelt thanks to Suzy Young at Perfect Getaways for her amazing support that boosted us to that win in the first.

Please get in touch if you fancy being another sponsor of Heswall FC and help us Save Our Season.

Please contact me, Chairman Robbie Matthews, on [email protected]

Many thanks and best wishes.
