Heswall FC's season came to an end on Saturday when we faced Ellesmere Port Town FC in the Wirral Senior Cup Final at Villa Park, home of Ashville FC.
The stage was set for a great day with the sun beating down on an immaculate playing surface and both teams looking to finish the season with a trophy.
Ellesmere Port Town, despite having the possibility of relegation from the West Cheshire League 1st Division hanging over them, started brightly and created a number of decent chances, but either the lack of a finish or fine goalkeeping from Heswall's Joe Collister kept the score level.
The first half came to an end goalless.
The second half brought much the same as Port dominated the game. Heswall were just not at the races on the day, and the game sparked into life when the Yellows gave away a needless foul on the flank, allowing a free kick to be floated in. The Port centre half rose highest to head home for the opening goal.
Going behind woke Heswall with Kieran Hughes going close after a mazy run, but the Port keeper was equal to it keeping his team ahead. Heswall huffed and puffed giving it everything, but could not get the goal required to take the game to extra time. Premier League referee Rob Jones blew the whistle, confirming Ellesmere Port Town as the deserved winners.
Heartbreak for Heswall as we tasted defeat in both Wirral Cup competition finals this season - but this should not take away the gloss of a successful season. The aim at the beginning was to challenge for promotion back to the first division, a feat achieved by Andy Cass and the first team lads, a remarkable achievement and one we are all proud of.
Our Reserve team has also had a very good season, finishing 5th in a very competitive third division and reaching the Amateur cup final, Manager Nathan Brooks and his team are building something very good and will continue to develop as a team while predominantly developing players to go and challenge for a place in the First Team squad.
Rob Davies and his Under 18 team had a tough season with too many issues and challenges but finished in a respectable mid table position in what was the lads final season in youth football. Rob has done a great job and the lads should be proud of their achievements and their development as they step up into the Reserve team squad for next season.
Heswall also have two squads playing at Under 14 level, both teams having a good season finishing second in their respective divisions with a couple of cup finals coming up.
Managers Lee Hawkins and Andy Bannon do a great job with the boys and we look forward to their progression as they head into U15 next season. It won't be long before they are also challenging for First Team places.
In a disrupted season, we are happy with how the season has gone. Promotion has given us the platform to challenge for honours across the club next season.
We would like to thank all our amazing supporters who have backed us all season, as well as our brilliant sponsors who have been so supportive and kind. We are proud to be more than just a football club and we appreciate the efforts and support of those who follow us. We couldn't and indeed wouldn't want to do it without you all.
We will be hosting our end of season Presentation day on Saturday July 17th. There will be an open door and we invite anyone who wants to come along to join us and celebrate a great season.
We are still on the lookout for sponsors for next season, so if you would like to get involved with our club please get in touch with Club Chairman Robbie Matthews on 07919877135 or [email protected] .
