Heswall FC: Mid-week round up of three hard fought games
On Monday, not long after I blasted the proposed European Super League here on the pages of Heswall Nub News, the half baked project began to unravel when Chelsea became the first of the 'Big Six' English clubs to announce their withdrawal.
Others followed suit and now the ESL is dead in the water.
On Monday I also had the chance to point out that there are super leagues right on our doorsteps, and invite everyone down to Gayton Park to watch grassroots football when circumstances permit, possibly from May 17 onwards. We really look forward to seeing you.
The midweek games arrived quickly this week with the First Team travelling to Maghull Reserves on Tuesday night in what is always a tough game at a well run and established West Cheshire League club.
Two goals from Matty Morris and a very good performance brought a victory for Heswall that keeps the momentum going in our push for promotion.
On Saturday, however, we'll be back in cup action when Mallaby are the visitors to Gayton Park in the Howarth and Gallagher bowl, the trophy we won earlier this year in a final delayed from the previous one. I know the lads will do everything in their power to defend the title.
While the first team travelled, the Reserves faced league newcomers Sutton Athletic at Gayton Park. A new team, yes, but one also featuring a number of experienced players who stuck to a sound game plan and beat us 3-0.
While the better team won on the night - and it was tough to take a defeat at this stage of the season - the contest was a good experience for Heswall Reserves and one they will surely learn from as they prepare for another big game at Rainford United on Saturday.
On Wednesday night, our Youth team faced another tough game at Runcorn Town. An injury depleted team battled throughout, and goals from 16 year old Harvey Forster and a fine brace from Ben Davies gave Heswall a 3–1 win. The Youth will be looking to maintain a winning run away to Litherland Remyca in the League Shield on Saturday.
It's hard to catch a breath at the moment with so many games coming thick and fast but we are eternally grateful to have our lads back playing football and we hope we can make the end of this disrupted season a positive one.
