Heswall FC: as one door closes another one opens…

Yesterday's Bank Holiday Monday brought conflicting outcomes and emotions for Heswall with both First and Reserve teams in Wirral District FA Cup action.

In the morning game, our Reserves travelled to Marine Park, West Kirby, to face Chester & Wirral League side Ellesmere Port FC in the Amateur Cup Final.

A packed ground saw Jamie Steele put the Yellows ahead after 35 minutes with a fine strike from the edge of the box nestling in the bottom corner.

In sweltering conditions and a swirling wind, Port battled back and edged the second half, equalizing with only a few minutes left with a tap in after keeper Josh Brooks made a great save.

Both teams pushed for a late winner without success, and the ref's whistle took the game to penalties. Sadly, the Port keeper made two saves, giving his side the win and taking the trophy back up the M53.

Manager Nathan Brooks and his team have had a really positive season, finishing fifth in a tough division and reaching the Cup Final. While the season ended on a disappointing note for them, as a club we are delighted with how they've performed and look forward to an uninterrupted season next time when we can have a real go at putting right the wrongs of this one.

Later in the day, our First Team travelled - ironically - to Ellesmere Port to face high flying Mersey Royal at Vauxhalls in the Wirral Senior Cup Final.

Our opponents have finished runners-up in Division One in their first season back at that level. Manager Glyn Norman has put together a strong squad who were favourites to take a place in the final.

In an entertaining game, goals from Heswall's evergreen Matty Holt and two strikes from leading goalscorer Joe Ford gave the Yellows a fantastic 3–2 win against the odds.

This group of players has been together a few years now and have developed into a tough team to beat - and they will be confident going into the final when they will face either Ellesmere Port Town or Sutton Athletic who meet on Saturday.

The final will be played on Saturday 12th June at Ashville FC, and kick off is at 2pm.

We had great support for the first cup final yesterday, and hope to take a big crowd with us to cheer on the lads in the next one.

Please come along and join us for our last game of the season with a chance of silverware.
