Merseyside Police officers have arrested a woman on suspicion of drink driving following a road traffic collision in Wallasey in the early hours of this morning.

At around 12.30am police received a report that a white Audi was in collision with street furniture in Wallasey Village, just after the junction with Leasowe Road.

Officers attended and the driver made off from the vehicle.

After a short foot pursuit, a 19-year-old woman from Heswall was detained and arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

She was taken into custody for questioning.

Forensic and witness enquiries are ongoing.

Roads Policing inspector Carl McNulty: "We at Merseyside Police will not tolerate those who feel it is acceptable to drive under the influence of alcohol. It is only through good fortune that this incident didn't end in serious injury or worse.

"If you have any concerns or become aware of anyone you suspect is driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs then please do the right thing and we will take action and remove them and their vehicle."

Anyone who witnessed the collision or captured anything on CCTV, dashcam or mobile phone is asked to call Merseyside Police on (0151) 777 5747, email: [email protected], or communicate via @MerPolCC on Twitter, or 'Merseyside Police Contact Centre' on Facebook, with reference 21000432385.
