Students across Wirral celebrated their A-Level results yesterday as plenty of A*s rolled in and many secured places at top universities.

At Bebington's Wirral Grammar School for Girls, Daisy Barrick got three A*s in Biology, Chemistry and Maths. She will be heading to Oxford University to study Medicine next month.

Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Daisy said: "Yeah I was a bit nervous coming in, but i'm really happy with what I got."

On the challenge of doing A-Levels during a pandemic, she added: "It's definitely a really weird experience, but everyone kept working hard and just kept going throughout the two years so hopefully everyone will be happy with their results today."

Rebecca Williams also got three A*s, this time in Maths, Chemistry and Physics.

Rebecca said she plans to study Medicine at Sheffield University and added: "I'm so excited and I can't believe I got [these grades]."

Some students at the school even chose to do four subjects at A-Level.

Among them was Emma Mao, who achieved success in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths, as well as her friend Wendy Ren, who chose similar subjects to Emma, but studied Further Maths instead of Physics.

They will be going to Oxford University and Imperial College London respectively.

Olivia McCrave was also celebrating a good result after a tough two years. She spoke about the barriers she had to overcome.

Olivia said: "At first Year 12 was fine, but the pandemic was very challenging. Lockdown learning was difficult, I had tech issues and all sorts.

"I did have a dip in my marks in Year 12, but managed to pass the challenge of lockdown in the end."

She got two A*s, an A and a B in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths and will be going off to study Medicine at King's College London.

Today was a very successful one for Wirral Grammar School for Girls overall, with the school achieving an overall A*-A pass rate of 69%, with 91% of pupils achieving between an A* and a B grade.

That is a huge achievement, given this year's national average rate for A*-A grades is 45%.

Elaine Cogan, headteacher at the school, said: "I am thrilled that today has gone so well. It has been a particularly trying time for pupils, parents and staff.

"I am proud that from the first day of each lockdown staff taught pupils online their full timetable and finished all of the examination syllabuses.

"The girls responded by producing excellent work and always went the extra mile."

Elsewhere in Wirral, St Anselm's College in Birkenhead was celebrating a set of results which were up by around 5% on those achieved last year.

Year 13 pupils enjoyed record grades, with 49% getting A* or A, and 74% scoring between A* and B.

St Anselm's also had a 100% pass rate, which the school said was a good example of how it improves pupil's potential as they progress through the college.

At Wallasey's Mosslands School, headteacher Adrian Whiteley was happy with his pupil's achievements.

Dozens of A* and A grades were achieved at the all boys school.

Mr Whiteley said: "I am immensely proud of all of my students, they are more than just a set of results, they are a group of outstanding young men and I would like to wish them the very best for the future, they will always be part of the Mosslands community."

An extraordinary success was had at Birkenhead Sixth Form college as Claudia Hutuleac secured a place at Oxford University despite studying in English, her third language.

Claudia achieved high grades in Drama, English Language and Spanish and will study at the University's Oriel College.

Mike Kilbride, principal at Birkenhead Sixth Form College, said: "What these young people have achieved is extraordinary.

"These have been quite unprecedented times, and the students have had an experience that has required considerable resilience, patience and flexibility."

At South Wirral High School in Eastham, all students applying to university through UCAS got their first choice after a great set of results.

These included William Dixon's As in English Literature and Film Studies, as well as a B in Product Design, which will see him study English Literature at Liverpool University.

Kyle Jones will be studying the same subject at Newcastle University after also getting As in English Literature and Film Studies, plus a B in History.
