Wirral Council has announced more closures amid high winds caused by Storm Eunice.

Any bookings for outdoor activities at Wirral leisure centres today have been cancelled.

The borough's four municipal golf courses are also closed today.

As well as this, Landican Cemetery Office and Book of Remembrance has also been closed.

Any families concerned with funerals booked in this afternoon can rearrange through funeral directors.

The closures come as residents are advised to only travel if "absolutely essential".

The council said Storm Eunice is likely to cause "severe overtopping" in some coastal areas.

The Met Office has weather warnings in place for Storm Eunice as forecasts show strong winds and high astronomical tides, which will pose risks for coastal areas in particular.

Forecasts predicted a 1.4 metre surge for today's 12.26pm tide, giving an overall tide height of 10.7m.

It is possible promenades could be affected up to three hours before and after high tide.

The areas most likely to be affected:

South Parade, West Kirby

Meols Parade, Meols

Mersey River Wall, New Brighton to Seacombe

The Dell, New Ferry

Residents are asked to avoid coastal areas, particularly those listed above, tomorrow daytime.

The following roads are currently closed and will remain closed until at least 4pm:

New Brighton: Whole of front from Harrison Drive to Rowson Street

West Kirby: Dee Lane and South Parade

But access will remain for residents and businesses.

In addition to this, New Brighton's Fort Perch Rock car park is closed and will remain closed until at least 4pm.

Wirral Council said the weather could cause significant issues on public roads and changes to bus, rail and sea transport schedules.

The strong winds are likely to damage a high number of trees.

The local authority urged people to steer clear of woodlands and wooded areas in parks.
