An area of the Puddydale is set to receive a bit of a makeover on an environmental theme.

This follows a successful bid for funding to the £500,000 Community Environment Fund, which was launched last year.

Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram has named the worthy winners, and among them was the combined force of the Rotary Clubs of Heswall, Mid Wirral and West Wirral.

The 58 successful projects are set to contribute to the city region's target of being net carbon zero by 2040, improve people's surroundings across the Liverpool City Region, while also bringing health benefits, encouraging long-term behavioural change and promoting community engagementand participationin environmental education programmes.

The successful Community Environment Fund projects support the following themes:

- Climate change and resilience

- Air quality and transport

- Water

- Accessible green spaces, habitats and biodiversity

- Waste and resources

- Health and wellbeing

- Carbon and environment literacy

- Energy reduction

- Food and agriculture

The backing for the Heswall project, Wildflowers on the Puddydale, will enable the creation of a summer wildflower area in an urban setting, designed to increase biodiversity and engage the local community.

It's a very welcome initiative. As lockdown has demonstrated, the Puddydale has an important role to play as a green space in the centre of town, and an area where young and old can relax or exercise.

An additional area with a difference and a dash of colour providing a habitat for endangered species like bees will bring benefits.

Congratulations and thanks to those who imagined it and made the successful bid for funds.
