Take a stroll on the Puddydale and you will see a lovely patch of colour alongside the Red Dale Apartments.

The wildflower patch, prepared and seeded in Spring this year, has sprung into bloom in the last few weeks with new flowers emerging all the time.

Currently, the area is a mass of yellow, white and blue with some red poppies showing through.

Both annual and perennial flowers were seeded so there should be a whole new raft of flowers in the next couple of years as the perennials come into bloom.

The 'Wildflowers on the Puddydale' project was carried out by members of the three Rotary Clubs that meet in Heswall, aided by a grant from the Liverpool City Region Environment Fund and help from the Wirral Turf team and local residents.

It shows how wildflowers can encourage pollinators and other wildlife in our urban areas, as well as giving pleasure to the many residents and visitors who use the Puddydale.

The area will be scythed in the autumn by Rotary members, ready to spring into life again in Spring 2022.

Member of Mid Wirral Rotary, Katherine Jenner, said: "We are delighted with the colourful display that is giving vital support to our bees and other insects.

"We have had lots of appreciative comments from local residents.

"With the school summer holidays not far away, we are hopeful that children will come and take a look.

"We hope they can learn, and watch the flowers grow and see the wildlife that's attracted to them. The wildflowers will do so much good for creatures we take for granted, some of which, like bees and bumblebees, are at risk.

"We really hope that people will be able to see lots of bees buzzing along, doing their essential pollinating thing and thriving."

It's 'Freedom Day' today, and even if it hasn't dawned exactly as we had hoped, it's pleasing to see a project like this one coming to fruition.

If there is any upside to a pandemic, perhaps it has at least reminded us of the importance of community and, that by working together, good things can be made to happen.

Enormous thanks to the Rotary clubs and volunteers who have made 'Wildflowers on the Puddydale' possible.
