In the small hours of this morning West Kirby RNLI was requested by the Coastguard to aid two people in difficulties trying to retrieve a stranded jet ski from Thurstaston beach mud flats.

West Kirby RNLI gave details of the operation:

"At 01.29 this morning West Kirby Lifeboat Volunteer Crew were paged to go to the assistance of two people trapped on a boat after losing their jet ski.

"West Kirby Lifeboat Seahorse was Launched 12 minutes later and was soon alongside the casualties at Thurstaston moorings.

"We returned the casualties to West Kirby Lifeboat Shore Crew and relaunched to find the jet ski.

"This was soon located down off Heswall and we towed it back to Sandy Lane Slip.

"The Seahorse was rehoused, washed down and returned to service."

The two people seeking the jet ski had become disoriented due to the darkness and unfamiliarity of the channels and mud flats.

They had previously run aground during an ebbing tide and had decided to return on the incoming tide to float the jet ski and return it to shore.

Speaking following the call out, Gary Price, West Kirby RNLI Lifeboat Deputy Launch Authority, said: 'This incident could have had a more troubling outcome but for the casualties quick thinking, calling 999 for the Coastguard when they realised they were in danger, and West Kirby RNLI lifeboat Seahorse provided a quick response.

"Getting cut off by the tide can be a frightening experience and we would remind individuals to check the tidal information.

"If you see someone in trouble, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard."

The RNLI is independent of Coastguard and government and depends on voluntary donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service.

Since the RNLI was founded in 1824, its lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 142,700 lives.

The RNLI is currently running an appeal called Mayday, raising much needed money as the organisation braces itself for a busy summer.
