A match full of endeavour and enterprise from both sides ended honours even, with Rovers in 15th place in League Two, and the home side third from bottom just out of the relegation places.
After a shapeless opening, Stevenage could have gone ahead in the 27th minute when Luke Norris rose to meet the impressive Luther James-Wildin's cross, but Tranmere keeper Scott Davies kept him out.
However, it was the visitors that looked the more likely victors at times - with Morgan Ferrier's cross-cum shot two minutes later striking the woodwork, with Stevenage's on loan Chelsea keeper Jamie Cumming looking beaten at his near post.
Rovers could have claimed all three points 12 minutes after the interval, when former England international and Everton stalwart James Vaughan latched onto Ferrier's pass to fire off a powerful low shot that Cumming blocked with his legs.
There was still time for Stevenage's debutant Matty Stevens to break the deadlock late on, but his shot flew across the goal, evading the onrushing Norris at the back post - to leave both sides having to settle for a point apiece.
