Prime Minister Boris Johnson - but for how long?
Prime Minister Boris Johnson - but for how long?

An excruciating Prime Minister's Questions this lunchtime has added to the expectation that Prime Minister Boris Johnson will have to either stand down or be forced out.

Two of his most senior ministers quit cabinet yesterday evening as more facts emerged about the Chris Pincher scandal, and today there has been a flurry of resignations by lower profile figures, a combination of departures which Labour leader Keir Starmer described as "the sinking ship leaving the rat".

Over the past few days the Downing Street Office of the Prime Minister was asked how much Boris Johnson knew about the past record of shamed Tamworth MP Chris Pincher - who admitted recently groping two men while drunk, but has denied several historical allegations - before appointing him to a position in the Conservative Whips' office.

Downing Street began by saying the PM knew of no specific allegations, until…

Last night Boris Johnson admitted he had been told about complaints about Mr Pincher in 2019 and made a "bad mistake" by not taking heed of them.

Very shortly afterwards, Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid resigned. Mr Sunak said the public expect "government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously", while Mr Javid told the Prime Minister he can "no longer, in good conscience, continue serving in this government".

Truthfulness and integrity were inevitably the focus of today's PMQs - when several Tory MPs invited Boris Johnson to throw in the towel - and of the resignation speech by Sajid Javid.

Nevertheless, the Prime Minister has vowed to carry on, saying he is in office thanks to a 'colossal mandate', while Jacob Rees Mogg, the Minister for Brexit Opportunities, has talked of his boss being PM for another 20 years.

Here in Heswall, which has three ward councillors, all Conservative, we hope to have an answer soon to the question, "Should he stay or should he go?"

This echoes a great tune by The Clash, which includes the possibly prophetic lyric:

Should I stay or should I go now?

If I go, there will be trouble

And if I stay it will be double
