Wirral police officers have posted a warning to local dog owners after cases of suspected poisonings at Storeton Woods and Royden Park in Frankby.

Writing on twitter they said: "Those of you who own dogs, please be mindful when taking them out for exercise.

"We have received reports of someone potentially spreading poisoned dog food in Storeton Woods and Royden Park.

"If you notice anything or anyone acting suspiciously then please do not hesitate to contact us."

The message ends with another warning - to anyone who might see fit to attempt to poison dogs.

"Anyone found to be doing this will be prosecuted."

Reactions on social media to the post include:

"What is wrong with some people?"

"Must have a screw loose."

"Why? Such terrible people."

One commenter suggested that it is possible mere rumours were being given too much credence, but another said not.

"My neighbour's dogs were both poisoned and I know of at least 2-3 others that have been poisoned, and the owner has posted online to warn people in the area. It's not a scare."
