Police are reminding residents to review their bike security as winter approaches.

With the longer nights comes the potential for opportunist thieves to try and steal property including bikes, so now is the time to review home security.

There are several ways to make life difficult for thieves, from getting the bike marked and registered, through to acquiring CCTV or doorbell cameras or secure bike sheds.

Just double locking your bike, including at least one that is a D-lock, will make the bike less desirable for thieves.

You can also lock the frame and both wheels to a secure cycle stand - secure your bike as close to the stand as possible to give any thieves little or no room to manoeuvre.

Officer Mark Cotton said: "Whether your bike is a top of the range model or a more modest affair it's your property, and to lose it to thieves is gut wrenching – it might even be your only transport to and from work.

"We know that as the days get shorter it gives criminals more time to find a household that hasn't thought about securing their bikes effectively. By taking certain steps you can make a thief think twice about choosing your property.

"It doesn't have to break the bank, simply by double locking your bike you are already making it harder for them.

"Another good deterrent is to work with us by keeping an eye out for neighbours by reporting suspicious activity and checking on neighbours who are away. If something doesn't seem right, please report it."
