Parts of Heswall, Parkgate and Neston underwater by 2050?
According to an interactive map created by Climate Central, a non-profit news organisation that analyses and reports on climate science, many coastal areas - including Lower Heswall, Neston and Parkgate - are at risk from being submerged by the year 2050.
Sea levels are rising as a result of global warming, which, according to the map, means that if nothing is done to arrest and reverse our direction of travel, the loss of land is inevitable.
A NASA study published at the start of this year revealed that 2020 was equal to 2016 as being the warmest year on record.
According to Climate Central, "Global warming has raised global sea level about 8 inches since 1880, and the rate of rise is accelerating. Rising seas dramatically increase the odds of damaging floods from storm surges."
The above screenshot of our little part of a world at risk shows what might happen if the waters of the River Dee extend their reach.
Heswall Shore would be pushed back, while Parkgate and Neston would be hit hard. Put it this way, the Parkgate front will not be the popular day trip destination it is today - unless you are a scuba diver.
Here at Heswall Nub News we take climate change very seriously, but couldn't help being reminded of the old Alan Partridge episode in which the presenter is hired to make a promotional video for a boat holiday company called Hamilton's Water Breaks.
Hamilton's intends to exploit the effects of climate change.
As Alan puts it: "One of the benefits of global warming - and international terrorism - is that more and more people are holidaying in England. And I'll drink to that! Cheers!
"Here are some reasons to consider a Hamilton's Water Break. With the melting of the polar ice caps most of East Anglia will be underwater in the next 30 years. So catch the Norfolk Broads while you still can."
