Among the many advantages of relaxed restrictions is the return of live author events organised by Sue Porter and her team at Linghams on Telegraph Road.

Over the past few years the store has become an important focal point outside London for book launches and signings, literary get togethers which, like so many other gatherings, were driven into the world of Zoom by the pandemic.

Before then, smaller gigs would take place in the shop itself, while star attractions could fill enough seats to warrant the booking of a much larger venue.

John Barnes, no stranger to discussing racism in sport and the wider world - and sadly no stranger to experiencing it - will talk about issues raised in his new book in the spacious Torintone Suite of the Thornton Hall Hotel in Thornton Hough.

The book is called The Uncomfortable Truth About Racism and has been described as 'eloquent and thought provoking'.

Born in Jamaica in 1963, John moved to the UK with his family in 1975 at the age of 12. Six years later he was a professional footballer, distinguishing himself for Watford, Liverpool and England, and in the process becoming this country's most prominent black player.

"By vividly evoking his personal experiences, and holding a mirror to this country's past, present and future, Barnes provides a powerful and moving testimony. The Uncomfortable Truth About Racism will help to inform and advance the global conversation around society's ongoing battle with the awful stain of prejudice."

John Barnes is nothing if not versatile: in addition to being one of English football's greats, he's danced on Strictly and won a perfect 10 for his salsa, rapped with New Order, and keeps busy as a TV sports presenter and pundit.

Free-thinking, perceptive and articulate, with vast experience of the ups and downs of modern football, he's pretty much the ideal booking for an event such as this.

The date is October 14, and you can buy tickets by clicking or tapping here.

Start time is 7pm, doors open at 6.30, and John will be signing copies of his book.
