It's Independents' Day tomorrow (and Sunday) - why not spend a little loot locally in celebration?
Sunday July 4 is Independents' Day.
This is not the same as Independence Day, the Federal holiday on which Americans celebrate July 4 1776, the date when the Second Continental Congress unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence, announcing the colonies' separation from Great Britain.
Nor has it anything to do with the movie 'Independence Day', in which a cigar smoking fighter pilot played by Will Smith helps the US President see off unpleasant aliens who want, locust-like, to gobble up planet Earth's resources.
Independents' Day UK has the aim of encouraging people to express their thanks for independent businesses by shopping locally and supporting them.
It's a good idea, but unfortunately this year July 4 falls on a Sunday when, let's face it, many independent businesses are closed.
Therefore, this year Independents' Day is actually two days - Saturday (when it's much easier for everyone to get involved) and the next day (when it will be less so).
Many high streets, including Heswall's and those in neighbouring towns, were feeling the pressure before the COVID pandemic.
During it they have battled hard to stay alive.
When restrictions finally lift they will need our support if they are to come off life support and lead healthy lives.
So this weekend, spare a thought for local independent retailers and service providers and, if you can, put aside a little cash to spend with them.
The high street is a vital artery for a town like Heswall.
Let's try to keep it healthy and vibrant and fit for the future.
