After years of being vacant it appears that new life could be breathed into Heswall's former police station at 140-144 Telegraph Road.

Salford based Hydes Brewery, which owns The Boat House in Parkgate, has applied to Wirral Borough Council for planning permission, and for alcohol and music licenses.

The planning application requests a change of use for the building, to a public house and restaurant. The garage, store and rear extensions will be demolished, and a new single story kitchen extension built, along with a single storey rear and side dining extension.

There'll be a new porch, and minor external alterations to what is one of Heswall's few distinctive buildings. The car park will be enlarged, and there'll be new paved areas for external seating complete with a retractable canopy.

The alcohol and music license application requests:

Sale by Retail of alcohol

Sunday to Thursday 11:00 to 00:00

Friday and Saturday 11:00 to 01:00

Recorded Music and Live Music

Sunday to Thursday 11:00 to 00:00

Friday and Saturday 11:00 to 01:00

Hours Open to the Public

Sunday to Thursday 11:00 to 01:00

Friday and Saturday 11:00 to 02:00

Heswall councillor, Andrew Hodson, said: "I'm very pleased to see positive plans for the old police station. It's obviously not good for the town if buildings are lying empty, and the station has been abandoned for far too long.

"But as far as licenses are concerned, we have to be mindful of residents who live nearby, so on that basis I believe a license until one in the morning would be too late, and will oppose it. That said, I wish Hydes Brewery all the very best with the development."

Anyone wishing to comment on the application has until May the 2nd to make a representation by downloading the appropriate form here.

On Thursday May the 5th Heswall will vote for a new councillor. The candidates standing are:

Ann Ainsworth, Labour

Barbara Burton, Green

Paul Connolly, Conservative

Lucy Johnson, Liberal Democrat
