Heswall Conservative councillor Andrew Hodson says it’s time to “stabilise the government once again”
Yesterday we asked 'should he stay or should he go?' - and today we know the answer: Boris Johnson is going, though when he will be replaced is unclear.
Making his resignation address outside 10 Downing Street, Mr Johnson said that in politics no one is "remotely indispensable" and that "our brilliant and Darwinian system will produce another leader to whom he will give as much support as he can.
"I've agreed with Sir Graham Brady, the chairman of our backbench MPs, that the process of chosing that new leader should begin now and the timetable will be announced next week. And I've today appointed a Cabinet to serve, as I will, until a new leader is in place.
Heswall has three local councillors, all of them Conservatives. Today Andrew Hodson responded to the tumultuous events of the past few days - days which brought to a head a long period of doubts about the truthfulness and competence of Boris Johnson.
Councillor Hodson said: "I have been contacted by numerous of my constituents, some who are glad to see the Prime Minister go, but many who still support him.
"It is felt that whilst in office he made many great achievements.
"Such as getting Brexit done, the jab roll out, low unemployment and his involvement in the Ukraine war; but it is also felt that he has become toxic with the main press running a campaign to remove him.
"As a Conservative I feel we should move forward as quickly as possible to appoint a new leader and stabilise the government once again."
Moments after Boris Johnson finished his speech, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss posted a tweet along the same lines.
"The PM has made the right decision," she wrote. "The government under Boris's leadership had many achievements - delivering Brexit, vaccines and backing Ukraine. We need calmness and unity now and to keep governing while a new leader is found."
Liz Truss is almost certain to be among the contenders to be our new Prime Minister. Among the others likely to join the field are Rishi Sunak, Sajid David, Michael Gove, Nadhim Zahawi, Jeremy Hunt, Suella Braverman, Penny Mordaunt, Ben Wallace, Tom Tugendhat, and Steve Baker.
Wherever your political sympathies lie, who do you think would make the best leader to steer us through these difficult times?
