Wirral has been successful with a second bid for funding from the Urban Tree Challenge Fund - which will see nearly 1,000 new trees planted across the borough.

A total of £367,645 has been secured from the fund, which will allow 959 new standard trees in Wirral by the end of March 2023.

These trees will provide a range of benefits to communities, including flood risk mitigation as well as improving wellbeing and delivering aesthetic improvements in neighbourhoods.

It will also be integral to Wirral reaching 'net zero' carbon emissions by 2041.

Cllr Liz Grey, Chair of the Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport Committee, said: "Increasing our tree canopy is vital as we tackle the climate emergency and is a commitment we have made as part of our 10-year Wirral Tree, Hedgerow and Woodland Strategy.

"Trees help to reduce air pollution and we have committed to planting and nurturing over 210,000 over the next 10 years to support this. But for our local communities they mean so much more. They add to the beauty of an area and improve the quality of life for people living in that area.

"Another key element of our Tree, Hedgerow and Woodland Strategy is to ensure that we plant the right tree in the right location in Wirral, which will help to give them the best chance of long-term sustainability and the best possible protection from diseases, pests and climate challenges. We are also working to re-establish hedgerows and other biodiversity enhancements."
