In less than six days a Just Giving appeal launched by Wirral Riding Centre to support the care of its horses and ponies has broken its £2000 target.

Phil Jones, who has run the popular Centre based in Little Neston since 2008, was faced with his biggest challenge - the consequences of COVID-19 and the lockdowns and restrictions that have come with it.

The Wirral Riding Centre has more than 30 horses and ponies and can cater for all abilities, from beginners through to experienced riders.

But horses and ponies need careful looking after, which isn't easy when income feels the squeeze. Early last year the Centre launched a similar appear for a smaller amount.

Phil described the problem: "Back in March and April last year I had many sleepless nights thinking how we would get through this global pandemic as a business.

"I set out a plan to make sure that all the horses and ponies would continue to be looked after as they have always been looked after.

"I promised all the staff that I would do whatever it takes to come out of this pandemic, so as a team we could start to rebuild the business.

"On top of the third lockdown some people will be aware we have had a very difficult few months and ended up with a considerably larger vet bill than we would normally have.

"So we decided to ask people again to help the WRC with the day to day care of our beloved horses and ponies.

"Unlike other lockdowns the weather has not been kind to us due to it being the middle of winter, which in return increases our use of hay, haylage, bedding and hard feed."

Having turned to the community for help, Phil has been blown away with its response.

He told Heswall Nub News: "We are overwhelmed by the support and generosity of our customers and our community in these very difficult times. People have been so kind. As you can imagine, the cost of keeping a horse is a significant financial commitment and this money will go towards keeping them comfortable and well fed, and to vet and farrier bills.

"Our top priority is our horses and ponies, and we need to keep them fit and healthy for when we re-open, which is hopefully not too far away. Many sincere thanks to everyone who has donated. It's amazing."

The generosity of donors to Wirral Riding Centre is matched by their warm comments, of which these are just a few.

- "This centre is a focal point for our community and we should support this."

- "Hope you get through this terrible time and I am happy to help with the upkeep of your horses and ponies."

- "Wishing you all the best. Have loved your riding school over the years. Prayers 🙠to keep you open and all staff and horses safe."

- "Lottie had just started her lessons when you had to close. She absolutely loved it, we hope this helps and that you can open very soon. We look forward to coming back."

- "We just love Wirral Riding Centre and my daughter's weekly lesson makes such a huge difference to her life. We're missing you very much (especially the lovely Darcy)."

- "Look forward to the end of the Covid restrictions and subsequently falling off one of your 'orses when you reopen."
