At 11am on Thursday, December 8th, the Heswall Society will be planting a small orchard of ten fruit trees, comprising apples, pears, cherries, plums and damsons on the triangle of open space formed between Thurstaston and Telegraph Roads.

This is being done as the Society's contribution to the Queen's Green Canopy Project. To help mark the occasion, the Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside will be in attendance and will plant the first tree.

A piper has been arranged to provide the music as the trees are planted.

As a nationwide initiative created to mark the Platinum Jubilee, the Queen's Green Canopy was due to conclude in December – the end of the Jubilee year. However, as the official tree planting season in the United Kingdom is from October to March, the initiative has now been extended to include the full tree planting season, beginning in October 2022 and concluding in March 2023.

The Heswall Society has been working closely with Nicola Wallbank, the Council's Landscape Manager – Tree Strategy and is very grateful for the support she and the Council are providing.

Steve Anderson of the Society says: "The event is open to all interested local people and it is hoped that there will be a good turnout on the day to mark the occasion.

"Attendees can also help with the planting should they wish following Nicola's expert guidance.

"This Heswall Society initiative should both enhance and protect this much valued special green space for future public benefit."
