A new name for Heswall police station: the people have spoken!
Many thanks to the 100+ readers who responded to our call to suggest a name for the new Hydes Brewery pub and restaurant which, all being well, will give a new lease of life to Heswall's old and long abandoned police station on Telegraph Road.
It's scheduled to open next year.
There were many imaginative proposals - a couple so imaginative they cannot be reproduced on the pages of a family 'hyperlocal' news website.
Our apologies that we can't mention all the ideas dreamt up by our informal think tank - but here are some of them:
How about Hydes naming the old police station 'Peelers' after Robert Peel the founder of the police?
A very sensible thought, as Hydes often names its establishments by nodding towards significant historical figures.
Other readers, affectionately I am sure, drew inspiration from slang words translating as 'police'.
We've got a Cowshed in Raby! It had crossed my mind to suggest The Pigsty.
On a similar theme came the rather smart and entertaining Pig and Whistle.
The Lock Inn cleverly conjured up late night events that might take place in the new watering hole in the absence of police officers.
We were not sure at all about the merits of the name The Bobby's H**m*t.
Then there were: The Jailhouse; The Clink; Plods; The Bridewell and The Old Bridewell (great minds drink alike); The Lockup; Bobby's Bar; The Constable; The Cop Shop; The Coppers Inn; The Grass House; Rozzers; Bizzies; Blues and Twos; 999 Telegraph Road; Dawn Raiders; The Thin Blue Line; The Station; The Blue Lamp; The Old Bill; The Fuzz and Firkin; Let's Be 'Avin' You; Dixons; Top of the Hill; and The Drunk Tank.
There were some voices raised against the scheme. One reader suggested the name of the revitalised building should be Heswall Tea Rooms, adding: I am in opposition to another drinking establishment in Heswall. I can't believe it. It should still be Heswall Police Station and have police constables in it. Or be a traditional tea room (like Betty's) to make the most of the architectural design."
This appears to be a forlorn hope.
It seems certain that next year Hydes will be recruiting people to spend time behind bars.
