The shape of Heswall to come - probably not a marina, but what does the town need?

Just over a year ago we reported how the Community Interest Company, One West Kirby, had canvassed residents for their opinions of the town, and their ideas for how it might be improved and become fit for the future.

Just over one thousand people responded, identifying, amongst other things, their desire for more local independent shops, community green spaces and events like festivals, along with a safer environment for pedestrians and fewer cars.

Ideas don't necessarily mean instant change. Late last year, One West Kirby criticised Wirral Council for its lack of action and 'piecemeal development of the town'. And right now an argument is raging about the promenade's new flood defences, with objectors saying they are a waste of money and will spoil the town.

But the good news is, people are thinking and talking about 'wither now?' for the places in which they live.

A few days ago, an online consultation hoping to create a masterplan for the development of Hoylake was launched.

Community forum Hoylake Vision wants to solicit opinions and thoughts on how the town's key public assets should feel and function, the types of activities, services and spaces on offer, and how they should adapt in future.

Visitors to the consultation site can share their thoughts on an 'Ideas Wall' and 'Interactive Map' as well as taking part in a survey; in this way the site is driven by public feedback, questions and ideas.

Heswall doesn't have groups like One West Kirby and Hoylake Vision, and maybe there is a good argument that we should. In the meantime, Heswall Nub News can share people's thoughts in feature articles asking questions about our own future.

There is interest out there. Our petition asking that Heswall is not forgotten as transport policy is developed - and given a direct train connection between the town and Liverpool - attracted more than a thousand signatures.
