Heswall FC First Team celebrating promotion
Heswall FC First Team celebrating promotion

In common with all football clubs, from grassroots to Premier League, it's an understatement to say this has been an unusual season for Heswall FC.

Nevertheless, 'The Yellows' shrugged off any pandemic blues, stayed fit and sharp despite long periods without organised group training sessions, and are ending proceedings in style.

Already promoted to the first division of the West Cheshire league - "back where we belong," said club Chairman Robbie Matthews - Heswall Reserves made the final of the Amateur Cup, played against Ellesmere Port at Marine Park in West Kirby, and, having dominated the first half, succumbed to a second period equaliser and then lost out in the ensuing penalty shootout.

It was a tough way to lose, but has no doubt served only to fire up the First Team who can lift a shiny piece of silverware this coming Saturday when they square up against Ellesmere Port Town in the Wirral FA Senior Cup.

The venue is Villa Park, Wallasey, kick-off is at 2pm, and it costs a mere £2 to get in - and you can't say fairer than that, especially if the action and entertainment equals or exceeds that of the Amateur Cup contest.

Robbie Matthews added: "It was great to see Heswall supporters turn out at Marine Park to cheer on our Reserves. You've no idea what it means to the lads to have fans interested in them and the grassroots game and giving them encouragement.

"If you can make time to travel to Ashville FC's Villa Park home on Saturday, everyone connected with the club will be delighted to see you - and with a bit of luck you'll be able to witness the First Team pull off a notable double and bring an important trophy back to Gayton Park."
